Modules Introductions

Module I – Getting Started

Module 1 is all about getting familiar with the rhythm, look, and feel of the lessons in the Series. This week will lay the groundwork for you to get the most out of the training. In going through the lessons each day, you will have the opportunity to put the material to good use through action steps. By the end of lesson 1 you will have already progressed further down the path.

Module II – Emotional Intelligence

Welcome to the second week! This week we will navigate through the world of emotions. First, identifying them and then looking at how they affect our decisions, our relationships, and our ability to learn! Emotions are a vital part of the human experience. While being filled with emotion is normal (whether joy or anger for example), being overwhelmed by them and led by them into decisions we wouldn’t normally make, is not something we need to allow. We can feel what we are feeling and know that these emotions have purpose! We can stay firmly planted in our commitments and not be swept away by them.

Module III – Mental Health

Welcome to your third week in the Sobriety Success Modules. This week we will explore an area that is far too often neglected or simply overlooked. Our mental health connects to every part of our lives. It affects our thoughts and perceptions, our emotions and self-esteem, our day to day decisions, our relationships, and our long-term goals

While gaining more insight on our mental health and stability, we will be having discussions about depression, stress management, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These are all terms you have heard before, but may not know exactly what they are, and whether or not they apply to you. This module will help you to identify challenges you may be having with mental health and give you information to help you navigate through rough waters. With determination, the help of certified counselors, support groups, and increasing your knowledge, you can become a more informed person who is able to face challenges related to mental health and conflict.

Module IV – The Importance of Relationships

Welcome to Module 4- The Importance of Relationships.  I’m sure you’ve heard the expression: “No, man, is an island.”  What does that really mean?  Well, humans were made to live in relationship. We are in relationship to our Creator and creation from day 1, as well as to our mother and father, guardians, teachers, brothers, and sisters. Soon we connect to neighbors, colleagues, peers, and other acquaintances in our communities. We socialize, work, pray, celebrate, grieve, solve problems, and create new ones with others.

There are certainly times we act with a degree of autonomy and spending some time in solitude can be beneficial. Many of the world’s great thinkers and inventors were not strangers to spending time on their own! There is much that requires 2 or more working together, like a conversation. Often life is more enjoyable sharing experiences with others. Starting from when we are very young, we are eager to connect to others; sharing new things we are learning.

Module V – Avoiding and Recovering from Relapse

After a real conviction and sense of urgency brings someone to the dry ground of sobriety and you have walked in those shoes for a while, there can be a “letting down of the guard.” This is where the commitment to stay sober, 12 hours at a time, may be challenged! You may make a decision that does not have your best interests at heart, but rather feeds into the mental compulsion to drink or use. If you give into this pull to go back to the old stand-by way of escape, falling back into consuming substances to numb the discomfort or pain, back into the old behavior and habits, then you are said to have had a recurrence or a relapse.

Modules VI – Elements of Self Compassion

Just because you have slipped and fallen that does not mean you are not worthy of love. It means you are human. Getting back up and dusting yourself off will require a certain tenderness toward yourself. Your commitment to stand firm is not about being perfect or stronger than everyone else. Rather, listening for that voice in the dark that urges you forward and gives you the reassurance that self-kindness is greater than self-judgment.
